Power System Planning

Power system planning covers generation planning, transmission planning, and a range of topics from tariffs to greenhouse gas emissions. Various constraints-both old and new-complicate power system planning: load growth uncertainties, transmission routing restrictions, reaching specified renewable energy generation targets, financial limitations, integrating non-utility generation and transmission, limiting GHG emissions, power system stability, market vs. regulated prices, and others. These issues can be addressed through:

  • Integrated least-cost generation and transmission planning studies
  • Incorporation of constraints and uncertainties directly or indirectly into power system planning-such as load growth scenarios, fuel use minimums and maximums for supply or emissions constraints, renewable portfolio standards (RPS) and reserve margins, assigning costs to GHG emissions, local or regional transmission capability, and others
  • Power market studies based on market-based nodal pricing
  • Evaluation of specific generation and transmission projects
  • Economic and financial analysis and feasibility studies
  • Rate, tariff, and regulatory studies

Using our state-of-the-art analytical tools, we have conducted numerous studies for the benefit of electric utilities, regulators, ISOs, and independent power developers. Our staff combines many decades of experience in system planning studies with equivalent expertise in system operations, power contracts, regulatory requirements, and economics.
