Demand Response
Demand response can be an effective tool for real-time supply/demand balancing, helping to reduce the magnitude of electricity price spikes as well as reducing the production of greenhouse gases. It can also reduce the need for expensive, minimally-used peaking plants. Advancements in the areas of smart meters and smart grid technologies are paving the way for the more widespread deployment of demand response programs.
However, many questions should be considered when planning a demand response program, including:
- How can demand response be integrated with resource and transmission planning to provide a cost-effective planning solution?
- How is the optimal generation mix changed as demand response becomes more popular?
- What is the best way to apply demand response to help counter the intermittent production of many renewable resources?
- Can demand response, in conjunction with other smart grid technologies, help the system to accommodate more of these renewable resources by, for example, reducing over-generation during off-peak hours?
Nexant's team, comprising experts with years of experience in power systems operations, economics, and modeling, has helped several organizations to address these and other demand response questions.
