COMET® Security Constrained Unit Commitment

COMET® is a production simulation software application used for real-time to mid-term commitment and dispatch of generation units. COMET is deployed in two footprints-it can be:

  • Implemented in control centers as part of a software suite for energy management systems for unit commitment and real-time economical dispatch.
  • Used as a simulation toolbox that can forecast electricity prices in all nodal markets. It replicates the security-constrained unit commitment calculation which clear day-ahead energy markets, and support the bidding strategy of market participants. Large-scale models can be implemented and solved using parallel computing.

COMET optimizes dispatch into wholesale energy markets by taking into consideration detailed generating unit characteristics, existing and planned transmission security constraints, fuel costs and allocation limits and emissions allowances.

  • Minimizes the production cost of commitment and dispatch
  • Functions as an operating horizon designed to support both short-term and day-ahead markets (24 hours to 168 hours) as well as longer-term simulations
  • Handles system and regional emission limits and fuel group constraints
  • Supports system and regional spinning and regulation reserve requirements
  • Supports either DC (MW only) or full AC transmission network model representation
  • Models constraints for both base case and contingency scenarios
  • Provides up to three limits for transmission lines, transformers, and interfaces
  • Incorporates maintenance schedules for all network facilities
