Biotechnology
Biotechnologies are applied to manufacture of bio-based chemicals, materials, and fuels from natural raw feedstock. They are also used in both the pharmaceutical (healthcare) and agro-food sectors.
Biotechnologies within industrial processes mainly involve fermentation or enzymatic conversion of biomass-derived feedstock. In a contained environment, genetically modified (GM) or non-GM microorganisms or cell lines from animal or human origin, are cultivated in closed bioreactors to produce a variety of goods. Likewise enzymes, which are derived from these (micro-) organisms, are applied to catalyze a conversion to generate the desired products.
Industrial applications of biotechnologies are relevant in sectors as diverse as the cleaning, textiles, food, fuels, bulk, and specialty chemicals, monomers and polymers, solvents and adhesives industries. About 5% of chemical sales are dependent on biotech processes.
