Nexant Client Acushnet Company Receives Massachusetts "Beacon for Energy" Certificate as First Qualified Alternative Energy Credit Recipient

Boston---November 16, 2009---Nexant (www.nexant.com), a global provider of intelligent grid software and clean energy solutions, announced today that the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (DOER) will present a “Beacon for Energy” certificate  to the Acushnet Company of Fairhaven, MA, a Nexant client.  The certificate recognizes Acushnet’s clean energy leadership, symbolized by the use of alternative energy sources such as cogeneration (onsite production of both heat and power—CHP) and its status as the first company to have an approved Alternate Energy Portfolio Standard (APS) facility for creating Alternative Energy Credits (AECs) for CHP under the Massachusetts APS program..

Acushnet Company—manufacturer of the Titleist, FootJoy, and Cobra golf brands—retained Nexant’s clean energy experts to help the company qualify its cogeneration system at its Titleist Golf Ball Plant II and transact the resulting AECs in the state marketplace.

"We entered into this initiative as part of an ongoing energy efficiency program,” said Hank Conaty, Senior Director of Golf Ball Engineering and Technology, Acushnet Company.  “This initiative represents a large investment in sustainable energy technology to reduce our energy consumption and our carbon footprint resulting in an effective reduction in energy costs in our golf ball manufacturing plant.  With Nexant’s help, we are now improving the investment paybacks on Acushnet’s alternative energy projects.”

Under the Green Communities Act passed last year, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts established an APS to promote lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and create new market opportunities for businesses and institutions in the energy technology and renewables sector.

Nexant, the largest independent marketer of renewable energy, specializes in helping businesses and institutions create and sell credits resulting from energy efficiency projects including cogeneration.  Nexant’s Clean Energy Markets group pioneered these energy efficiency markets in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and now Massachusetts, helping organizations in these states create over 1.25 billion kWhs of energy efficiency credits - equivalent to a reduction of over one half million metric tons of GHG emissions.

DOER Commissioner Philip Giudice will present the certificate to Acushnet on Monday, November 16 at ceremonies at Acushnet’s Ball Plant II in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts at 2 pm EST. At that time, Nexant will present Acushnet with a check for $300,000 representing the proceeds from sales of AECs created next year.
