Nexant to Lead Discussion on Future of Carbon Capture Technologies

December 3, 2007---Washington, D.C.---Building on its recent work in carbon dioxide capture and sequestration, Nexant (www.nexant.com) has been invited to lead discussions at the 2007 Infocast conference entitled "Carbon Capture: Status and Outlook" in Washington. D.C. On December 3rd and 4th, Nexant senior consultant Scott Olson will lead sessions on advanced carbon capture technologies and the potential for fossil fuel plants to incorporate carbon capture on a broad scale in the future.

Nexant recently completed work in evaluating different types of carbon capture technologies, including advanced amine, chilled ammonia, and hydrates. In addition, Nexant recently published a comprehensive report-Industry Options for Carbon Management-that details the costs and impact of carbon capture on a number of major industrial carbon emitters. Additional information on the report is available at: http://www.nexant.com/services/ecm_multi_client_report.html.

In leading the conference discussions on carbon capture technologies, Olson will address the:

  • Myth that carbon capture "cannot be done today." Technologies are available, but current designs are challenged by high costs and limited incentives for implementation
  • Size of the market opportunity if carbon capture and storage becomes widespread in the future. Given the need to reduce carbon emissions to meet stabilization goals across many industrial sectors, this market has a $500 billion potential
  • Other hurdles to the future use of carbon capture and storage, beyond just technology issues
Given that a number of recent conventional and advanced fossil energy projects have failed to move forward because they lack detailed carbon capture and storage plans, developers are realizing the need to become much more involved in this critical issue. Nexant believes that there should be a very bright future for advanced carbon capture technologies capable of meeting long-term U.S. Department of Energy goals of reducing the additional cost of energy while utilizing carbon capture technologies to 10% or less.
