Reducing Carbon Dioxide Emissions-Nexant to Lead Discussion on Biobutanol Potential as Alternative Fuel
December 5, 2007---White Plains, NY---On December 6th, Nexant's Ron Cascone, Manager of Biofuels Development, and James Evangelow, President of Chemical Strategies, will lead a discussion on the potential for "second-generation" biofuels---with a focus on biobutanol---to compete successfully with ethanol in blending with or substituting for gasoline, and possibly in blending with diesel fuel.
The discussion will be featured in the afternoon session of the Second Annual Energy and Resources Conference at the New York Chemists Club, sponsored by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (Metro NY Section) and the American Chemical Society (Marketing & Economics Group). This year's conference theme is "Reducing CO2 Emissions: Short-Term and Long-Term Strategies."
In leading the conference discussion, Cascone and Evangelow will address:
- The need for second-generation biofuels
- Why biobutanol is an attractive alternative to ethanol
- Biobutanol's key properties in contrast to ethanol
- Biobutanol pricing as a solvent and as a fuel
- Biobutanol production options and estimated relative costs of production
- Potential roadmap for commercial biobutanol development
- How bioethanol's commercial history could be a model for biobutanol development
Nexant's work in the alternative fuels area includes recently published studies on "Biobutanol: the Next Big Biofuel" and "Liquid Biofuels: Substituting for Petroleum". In addition, in the carbon management area, Nexant has just published "Carbon Management: CO2 Capture, Transport and Sequestration".
