Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC)

Implementation of gasification projects requires expertise that spans all phases of project execution and an understanding of a complex mix of technologies. Nexant's broad experience with gasification and related technologies, including acid gas removal, sulfur recovery, air separation, gas turbines, combined cycles, and chemical co-production represents a major asset. We offer a unique combination of design innovation, as-built experience, and corporate commitment to gasification technology.

Nexant's commitment to gasification technology spans more than 50 years, stemming from when Nexant was part of the Bechtel organization. Experience in designing and constructing modern coal processing units began in the late 1940's. Since the early 1970's, Energy Technology staff have performed feasibility assessments to determine the cost and appropriate applications of the technology.

Innovation is always important and is especially critical during the early engineering activities. Since this phase sets the plant configuration, it also solidifies the overall economics of the project. Therefore, it is essential to incorporate innovative design concepts in order to achieve the optimal combination of overall capital and operating costs. Through many recent gasification projects and studies, Nexant has developed a group of specialists that understands the nuances of design and state-of-the-art integration concepts. As a measure of our success in encouraging and applying innovation, industry has given awards for innovation to a number of our gasification projects including those for Tampa Electric, Tennessee Eastman, and Union Carbide.

As a project proceeds into detailed engineering and construction, there is no substitute for actual startup and operating gasification experience. Nexant's operations involvement with operation of the Polk Power Station, Cool Water, Tennessee Eastman, Lunan, and Millennium projects has given us design insights that cannot be achieved through studies or detailed design alone. This experience translates directly to more operable, maintainable, and safe plant designs.

Our scope of services spans the entire spectrum:
  • Feasibility studies

  • Preliminary engineering

  • Detailed engineering and procurement

  • Construction and construction management

  • Permitting and licensing

  • Maintenance

  • Startup and operations

  • Project development and equity participation
Recent projects include:

  • Environmental Footprint Comparison, PC vs. IGCC, U.S. EPA.: Nexant was the lead subcontractor to the EPA on this report providing technical and cost information for IGCC and PC technologies. Detailed comparisons were provided, allowing the environmental performance and operational capabilities of these technologies to be compared.

    EPA/Nexant Report

  • Gasification Plant Cost and Performance Optimization: In this over $3 million dollar project, Nexant teamed with ConocoPhillips and the US DOE to evaluate designs, develop cost estimates, and perform optimization of ConocoPhillips E-GAS technology. The technical and cost information from the Wabash River Coal Gasification Repowering Program was used to develop a greenfield plant as the base case. Cases included coal and coke feeds for power, steam, hydrogen, and liquid transportation fuels.

    DOE/Nexant IGCC Optimization Report

  • Gasification Alternatives for Industrial Applications: An extension of the IGCC Optimization Study above, Nexant was commissioned by the Department of Energy to explore two unique gasification cases using Gas Technology Institute's (GTI) U-GAS fluidized bed gasifier: 1) an industrial size (25 MW) facility using subbituminous coal for combined heat and power, and 2) a large-scale (250 MW) facility using North Dakota lignite for power generation only. In conjunction with GTI, Nexant developed complete system designs and cost estimates for each case.

    Industrial and Lignite Gasification Report

  • Indian Coal IGCC Analysis: In conjunction with the US Department of Energy and the Gas Technology Institute, Nexant has assisted in coal gasification testing, selection of gasifier types for high ash India coal, and preliminary design of a 100 MW demo plant at NTPC's Dadri Power Station in Delhi.
