Biomass
Nexant has experience in biomass production, handling, and use. Previously, as part of the Bechtel Technology and Consulting (BTeC) organization, Nexant engineers were involved with two large bagasse projects—Okeelanta and Osceola. Nexant has worked with advanced gasifier designs and development of closed-loop fuel systems, and the development and commercial application of modular fluidized bed biomass power systems. We have worked on two projects with FERCO's (originally Battelle's) biomass gasification technology: a 200 tpd (dry) demonstration facility in Burlington, Vermont and a conceptual study for the pulp and paper industry for black liquor gasification. As a part of U.S. DOE-funded projects, Nexant has also evaluated feasibility of biomass gasification based co-firing at existing coal-fired power plants.
Major recent work has been evaluation of technologies germane to the production of cellulosic ethanol and other alcohols from biomass. These include syngas clean-up schemes for wood-fed gasifiers, sulfur clean-up schemes for black liquor derived syngas, oxygen plant designs (with Praxair), analysis of state-of-the-art technology for producing alcohols from syngas (cellulosic ethanol), and in-depth technical and environmental analysis of sulfur removal technologies.
Solar
Nexant provides engineering services for a wide range of commercial solar thermal projects including: central receiver with Rankine cycle power conversion; parabolic trough with Rankine cycle power conversion; parabolic trough integrated with a fossil-fired combined cycle; direct and indirect thermal storage systems for parabolic trough projects; advanced (inorganic) heat transport fluid systems for parabolic trough projects; and low temperature process heat systems for mining operations. Recent activities included the engineering, design, and construction of the 10 MWe Solar Two central receiver demonstration project in California, and the preliminary design of the 1,000 MWht indirect thermal storage systems for the AndaSol 1 and 2 parabolic trough projects in Spain.
Wind Power
Nexant has over 20 years of wind energy experience, including providing power project feasibility studies, project development, engineering, procurement, and construction management as well as providing analysis of advanced wind turbine technology and energy storage integration. Our clients included government agencies and private sector companies. Nexant's expertise and knowledge of domestic and international markets are crucial for applying wind energy competitively into commercial power markets.
Energy Management & Storage
Nexant has evaluated energy storage and power conditioning technologies with EPRI, DOE, and industry. Work in this area includes the technical specifications for a 10 MW battery system to be used for frequency regulation and spinning reserve, and providing cost input data for EPRI's Battery Storage Evaluation Software (BaSES). Nexant has also worked to develop SMES for utility and defense applications. We participated in evaluating the use of superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) to enhance SDG&E transmission stability. Additional experience extends to advanced batteries, compressed air, flywheel, capacitor, hydrogen and other energy storage technologies.
