Since 1984, the Power Computer Applications® (PCA®) team has been one of the world’s principal developers and suppliers of advanced methods and software for electric power network calculations. In 2000, PCA became a business unit of Nexant, Inc. and is now the core of Nexant's Energy Solutions practice, providing software and associated consulting services in the fields of:
- Power-flow-based simulation and optimization for market analysis (including FTR/CRR/TCC auctions), and power-system operations, online control, and planning
- External power-flow modeling
- Security constrained unit commitment
- State estimation and topology analysis
- Fault analysis
Our greatest strength is our technical depth and experience in the field of network-related methods and software for the electric power industry. For example:
- Many of our innovations have been adopted as global standards, including: fast decoupled power flow, security constrained optimal power flow, sparse matrix solutions, linear programming dispatch, network equivalents, security constrained unit commitment and orthogonal and generalized state estimation.
- We have completed major industry-sponsored software developments for entities such as the California ISO (congestion management); New York ISO (single and multi-period TCC auctions); PJM (FTR auction); and National Grid Company (OPF, fault analysis).
- We supply standard and custom advanced application software for control center use through most of the world’s major EMS vendors.
- Our team’s professional recognition includes three IEEE fellowships (for contributions to power system analysis); a Baker Prize (for best paper from all IEEE societies); and an IEEE Millennium Medal (for outstanding contributions to the field).
