presents its
24th Annual Petrochemical Conference

"The Future of the North American Petrochemical Industry: Is there a Future?"

October 24-25, 2006
Houston, TX

As the global petrochemical industry moves into a cyclical fly up with the likelihood of an extended period of good profitability for the next couple of years some important issues face the future of the North American petrochemical industry.

A key concern is the lack of investment in North America (there are currently no new crackers or major expansions planned) for a number of reasons

  • High oil and gas prices and a limited supply of ethane in the United States
  • Low demand growth (demand declined in 2005 for a number of products)
  • Increasing process and product imports
  • Declining export competitiveness

This has led to a strong sense of urgency to invest outside of North America driven by advantaged feedstock (Middle East) and market growth (China).

Unless a sizeable amount of additional capacity is built, the United States will become a large net importer of many ethylene and propylene derivatives before 2010. Will these off-shore investments by North American companies be the new supply base for the United States?

Based on the known global expansion activities, particularly in China and the Middle East, there will be a large overcapacity of most ethylene, and some propylene, derivatives in the 2010-2012 period. Operating rates for the affected derivatives could again drop below 85% and margins could collapse. While this may seem too far away to worry about today, companies must plan for this period when they have the capital to change their business portfolio and strategic direction.

Where, then, will companies invest their profits?

  • Investments in feedstock advantaged countries
  • Investments in China
  • Acquisitions
  • Diversification
  • Developing new feedstock technologies

The Nexant/ICIS Houston Conference will address these and other pertinent issues.
