NATURAL GAS

Market/Gas Utilization Studies

As natural gas has become recognized globally as a reliable, flexible and environmentally friendly fuel, demand and trade have increased and are projected to continue to do so. This process has been aided by the development of combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) technology in the power sector, providing more efficient and less polluting generation than conventional coal or oil-fired plant. Natural gas is also widely used in the industrial sector in a large number of countries, although gas utilization in the commercial and residential sectors on a large-scale is generally restricted to industrialized countries.

Continued natural gas demand growth is anticipated in the new markets of Asia in particular, where power shortages and air pollution are major problems. Growth in natural gas utilization in such countries starts from a relatively low base, at least in comparison with many industrialized countries, as natural gas has historically been overlooked due either to infrastructure constraints or its being economically uncompetitive with alternative fuels.

Gas market dynamics are also changing rapidly in gas-intensive economies such as the UK and the US, where dwindling indigenous resources, in combination with elevated oil prices, have driven gas prices to unprecedented levels. This has prompted a drive for gas imports and a rush amongst new project developers to secure market share.

Nexant Services

Nexant employs an integrated methodology for supply and demand forecasting which gives a worldwide view of projections for energy and, more specifically, gas demand. Nexant's forecasts of supply and demand for primary energy sources are developed on a country-by-country basis, considering all pertinent market factors, including inter-fuel competitiveness, energy policies, subsidies, and taxation.

Analysis of the issues surrounding natural gas markets and supply-demand characteristics requires knowledge of a wide range of related issues. Our expertise in these areas includes:
