Nexant's Clean Energy Solutions (CES) group is in the business of verifying, monetizing, and transacting renewable energy and energy efficiency and their associated environmental attributes (CO2, SO2, NOx and other emissions) in the form of renewable energy certificates, energy efficiency certificates, and carbon dioxide credits in mandated, voluntary and exchange markets. In addition to providing these products to businesses, utilities and institutions, CES provides consulting services to help corporations with greenhouse gas strategies, verify energy utilization and reductions, and develop onsite clean energy.
Renewable Energy Certificates
Renewable energy certificates (RECs) or "green tags" are financial instruments representing the environmental attributes (CO2, SO2, NOx, and other emissions) derived from generating electricity from renewable energy sources. RECs are traded in the form of certificates that are expressed as megawatt-hours of electricity. Nexant's CES group provides renewable energy from certified renewable sources including solar energy (photovoltaic and solar thermal), wind, small hydro, biomass, geothermal, and landfill gas.
Energy Efficiency Certificates
Energy efficiency certificates (EECs) or "white tags" are financial instruments representing the environmental attributes (CO2, SO2, NOx, and other emissions) derived from reducing electricity use from energy efficiency projects. EECs are traded in the form of certificates that are also expressed as megawatt-hours of electricity. Nexant's CES group provides energy efficiency from certified sources of energy use reduction including heating, ventilation, and cooling (HVAC), lighting, motor drives and pumps, demand response, energy management, and cogeneration or combined heat and power (CHP).
Carbon Dioxide Credits
Carbon dioxide (CO2) credits or greenhouse gas (GHG) emission offsets are financial instruments representing the environmental attributes (CO2 and other greenhouse gases) derived from reducing GHG emissions from offset projects. CO2 credits are traded in the form of certificates that are expressed as metric tons of emissions. Nexant's CES group provides CO2 offsets from certified sources of GHG emission reduction including methane from agriculture, wastewater and landfill, thermal-based energy efficiency, and certain renewable energy projects.
Consulting Services
CES provides high-level consulting in formulating GHG strategies and in managing the development of programs to implement those strategies. GHG-based consulting engagements focus on the creation of an inventory of GHG emissions, evaluation of GHG reduction opportunities, development of database systems to track emissions and projects, formulation of GHG reduction goals, and application of cost-effective and highly accurate M&V processes for determining GHG reductions.
In addition, utilizing an advanced proprietary energy utilization software system that employs artificial neural network (ANN) technology, CES provides services in the verification and certification of energy use reductions achieved through energy efficiency and conservation projects.
Finally, CES provides services in the strategic design, development, and financing of onsite clean energy facilities through environmental attributes for corporations. These onsite facilities include solar energy (photovoltaic and solar thermal), biomass, and cogeneration.
