Build United’s 2018 Day of Caring

Jul 24, 2018

On May 9th, Build United held their annual Day of Caring in Grottoes, VA. The United Way of Harrisonburg and Rockington County’s Build United Program empowers low-income homeowners to live independently by providing repair services to make homes more accessible and secure. The primary objective of the 2018 initiative was to provide the homeowners with much needed health and safety, and energy efficiency improvements to their homes.

Nexant provided oversight and guidance on some of the improvements that qualified as measures under Dominion’s Energy Share Program, which provides bill payment assistance and weatherization services to its customers that are classified as veterans, low-income, elderly, or people with disabilities. At this event, the weatherization services provided to the residents included installation of LED lighting, attic insulation, air sealing plus an ASHRAE fan, vapor barriers, and mobile home belly insulation. The health and safety improvements included installation of new front and back doors, adding railings to a staircase, re-graveling a driveway, repairing the roof of a shed, and installing smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors as needed.

I was on site at the events and had the opportunity to speak to the homeowners. Both homeowners expressed their appreciation for the work that was being done and were very happy with the upgrades and improvements made to their homes. The first homeowner was grateful that her energy bill would be reduced, and that she would now be able to use her back door as they repaired the steps and added a railing. The second homeowner was grateful that his wheelchair would be able to fit out of his newly-widened front door.

Both homeowners were looking forward to the increased functionality resulting from the newly installed health and safety measures, as well as reduced energy bills from the energy efficiency upgrades. It was great to see all of these organizations come together in order to give back to the community, and I was proud to represent Nexant at the event.

The event was conducted in joint collaboration between United Way, Dominion Energy (Dominion), LSC Communications, Community Housing Partners, and Nexant. We are proud to work with Dominion Energy on implementing Low-Income Energy Programs.
