Fun Facts about Small Business Customers

Jun 15, 2015

Did you know that small businesses are responsible for 55% of all jobs and 66% of all net new jobs since the 1970s?[1]  They also spent $130 billion on energy in 2011.[2]

Since these fun facts help illustrate the impact of small businesses in your community and business, I thought I would share a few more from a 2011 Energy Survey[3] given to small business owners by the National Small Business Association (NSBA):

  • When asked “how concerned are you about the future energy costs of your business,” 92% were either “very concerned” or “moderately concerned.”
  • When asked “what is the most important reason why your business changed how it uses energy,” 88% of small business owners said “to save money.”
  • When asked “in what ways have you coped with rising and/or volatile energy costs,” the most popular response (43%) was “increased prices.
  • When asked “within the last three years, have you taken one or more steps to reduce the amount of energy your business consumed,” 82% said they had taken steps to save energy.

Small business owners are aware of their energy use and ready to do something about it.  A Comprehensive Small Business program can help them achieve deeper, cost-effective energy savings – a benefit that is shared directly with your community.
